Village Lots and Rural Acreage
Concrete Contractors in Hazel Green work in both a village and a town of the same name. Lead brought the first known settlers around 1822, and for the early years of the rush the place went by Hardscrabble. The name Hazel Green, taken from the hazelnut thickets near the site, replaced it when a post office opened in 1838. The village had 1,173 residents in 2020, almost all of them, 1,151, in the Grant County part and 22 in Lafayette County. The separate Town of Hazel Green around it covers 35.2 square miles with 1,084 people.
Lead country underfoot
Mining began here two centuries ago, and old workings are part of the landscape in this region. When we excavate for a slab, we watch for soft spots, fill or voids that do not match the surrounding ground. A slab built over a hidden void will eventually crack and drop. If we find something questionable, we stop and tell you rather than pour over it.
Village homes
In 2010 the village had 531 households living in 557 housing units, and its median resident was 39.1. Many homes have the concrete of their decade:
- a one- or two-car drive leading to the garage
- a stoop with a short walk to the street
- a small back slab outside the kitchen door
The common upgrades are replacing a cracked drive, enlarging the patio and rebuilding steps that have settled.
Rural driveways and farmyards
In the Town of Hazel Green, driveways can be long and lots are large. Owners often limit concrete to the turnaround and parking area by the buildings, the part that gets shoveled, and keep the long run in gravel. Where they meet, we form a deeper concrete edge that stone cannot work under. Farmyard and shop slabs get sized to the heaviest equipment that will sit on them.
Patios for the outdoors
On a country property, the back patio gets daily use. Broom texture stands up to work boots and weather, a stamped edge adds some style, and the slab falls away from the house and gets sealed after its cure.
Freeze-thaw and air entrainment
Outdoor concrete in southwest Wisconsin goes through many freeze-thaw cycles. Outdoor slabs get entrained air, a proper cure and a sealer. For the first winter, use sand, not rock salt.
Garages and shops on acreage
Rural Hazel Green properties often add a detached garage or shop long after the house. A building slab needs deeper edges under the walls, sill anchors placed while the concrete is wet, and a floor that falls toward the overhead door. If a lift, a tractor or a loaded trailer will sit inside, tell us, because that sets the thickness and the steel. We also look at where roof water will land so it does not undermine the slab edge.
From Hardscrabble to Hazel Green
The miners who came around 1822 called the place Hardscrabble, and the Hazel Green name arrived with the post office in 1838. Some of the oldest village homes sit on small lots near the original center, where the public walk, the stoop and the drive are crowded close together. There, the order of work matters: steps first so the landing height is fixed, then the walk to meet them, then the drive apron to meet the street. Poured out of order, each piece is forced to fit a grade the last one set, and water ends up pooling at the joints.
Permits
Because the village spans two counties and the town is a separate unit, we check permit requirements with the right local office for your address.

Hazel Green Questions
Can part of my rural driveway stay gravel?
Yes. Pouring near the house and garage and keeping gravel farther out is common. We build a firm edge between them.
What if you find a soft spot when digging?
We stop and show you. A void or fill pocket has to be dealt with before pouring, or the slab will crack over it.
Do you work in both the village and the town?
Yes, and we check with the right office for permits at each address.
