Concrete in Old Lead Country
Concrete Contractors in Benton work in a village that went by Swindler's Ridge in its early days. It was later renamed for Thomas Hart Benton, the Missouri senator. Andrew Murphy, his wife and five sons homesteaded in the area in 1827, and after the Black Hawk War made the region feel safe, settlers came in numbers for its rich lead. Mining has long since given way to farming and modern business across the 28-square-mile town, whose southern edge is the Illinois line. In 2020 the village had 946 people.
Village homes
In 2010 the village had 973 people in 398 households, with 426 housing units. Much of the housing is older, and its concrete shows it:
- Front steps that have settled and lean away from the house
- Driveways patched over and over, with patches at different heights
- Walks with trip edges from heaving
- Garage floors that pond water
A patch on a failed base only delays replacement. Failed panels come out, the base gets rebuilt, and new concrete goes in.
Farm and outbuilding slabs
Outside the village, the Town of Benton is farm country. Machine shed floors, feed pads and shop slabs carry much heavier loads than a driveway. The heaviest machine sets the thickness and the steel; set thickened edges under walls and plan the floor slope so water and wash-down drain out the door.
The Galena River
Just east of the village, the Galena River carries the town's drainage south toward the Mississippi. Lower properties near the river can sit on softer, wetter ground. On those lots we dig to firm soil, rebuild with compacted crushed stone and keep the finished slab above grade.
Mining ground
In lead-era country, old diggings can sit below the surface. We watch for soft spots and fill as we excavate and stop to talk with you if something looks wrong.
Freeze-thaw
Outdoor slabs here need entrained air, a careful cure and a sealer. Use sand the first winter; afterward, reseal every two to three years.
St. Patrick's and the village center
Father Samuel Mazzuchelli founded the village's Catholic parish, St. Patrick's, and is buried in its cemetery. The village itself is small, about 0.84 square miles at an elevation of 860 feet, with Wisconsin Highway 11 through downtown. Homes near the center tend to be older, on modest lots where steps, walks and a single driveway make up most of the concrete. When two or three of those need work, doing them together lets the grades line up.
Small village, wide-open town
The contrast between the compact village and the 28-square-mile farm town shapes the work. In the village, jobs are steps, walks and single driveways on small lots, often with tight access. Out in the town, jobs are longer driveways, shop floors and feed or equipment pads, where the questions are load, drainage and how a truck reaches the pour.
Homes in the shadow of the old diggings
The Murphy family's 1827 homestead and the settlers who followed after the Black Hawk War were here for lead, and the village grew on a ridge once called Swindler's Ridge. That history means some yards sit on disturbed ground: old fill, filled shafts or uneven layers of soil. Before a driveway or garage floor goes in, we probe the subgrade and proof-roll it where we can. Any spot that pumps or sinks under load gets dug out and rebuilt with compacted stone, and if a void turns up, the pour waits until it has been dealt with properly.
Permits
We check with the village or the town for any permit your project needs.
Benton Background
- Lead-era settlement. The Murphy family homesteaded in 1827; lead drew settlers after the Black Hawk War. The village was once Swindler's Ridge.
- Farm town today. The 28-square-mile town borders Illinois, and farming and modern business have replaced mining.
- Village size. 973 people, 398 households and 426 housing units in 2010; 946 people in 2020.
- Galena River. The town drains to the Galena River, which runs south to join the Mississippi.

Benton Questions
There is a widening gap between my stoop and the wall. What now?
We remove them and pour new steps on a solid base so they stay against the house.
Can you pour a machine shed floor?
Yes. Tell us the heaviest equipment and we size thickness, steel and base to it.
What if you hit an old mining pit?
We stop and show you. Soft spots or voids have to be dealt with before the pour.
