Concrete for Old Lots and New Ones
Concrete Contractors in Epworth see two very different towns in one. Laid out in 1855, Epworth borrowed its name from the Lincolnshire town where John Wesley was born. It incorporated on November 20, 1879. Today it sits on U.S. Route 20 roughly 12 miles west of Dubuque, and a large share of the newer residents commute to work in Dubuque or elsewhere. The 2020 census counted 2,023 people, up from 1,428 in 2000, and 717 housing units, up from 500.
The older core
Houses near the original town plat can be well over a century old. Their concrete tends to have the same problems:
- Steps that lean away from the porch, because the original stoop rested on soil instead of a footing.
- Walks with a mix of old concrete and patch material, each patch a slightly different color and height.
- Single-width driveways to detached garages, often cracked through where they cross into the alley or street.
On these lots we often replace steps and walks together so the grades and finishes line up, and we set new steps on a proper base so they stay against the house.
The newer edges
Roughly 217 of Epworth's housing units were added between 2000 and 2020. Those lots carry the builder concrete of their decade: two-car drives, small patios and stoops over backfill. Twenty years in, those lots typically need a third parking spot, a bigger patio or a stoop rebuilt after it sank.
A highway town's driveways
With U.S. 20 running past town and most working residents driving to jobs elsewhere, driveways see a commuter's routine: early starts, cold engines, slush carried in from a salted highway. Brine is hard on concrete. Outdoor pours get an air-entrained mix, driveways get a broom texture for grip, and the pitch is set so meltwater drains instead of collecting in a low spot to freeze overnight. For the first winter we ask owners to use sand instead of rock salt. In later years, resealing on a two- to three-year cycle slows salt water soaking into the surface.
Divine Word College and larger properties
Divine Word College, a Roman Catholic seminary, is based in Epworth. Larger institutional and acreage properties around town have their own concrete needs, like longer walks, parking pads and outbuilding floors. Those jobs follow the same rules as a house, only larger: base, steel, joints and drainage planned before the truck arrives.
Western Dubuque schools and morning traffic
Epworth students attend the Western Dubuque Community School District, and school-day mornings mean cars backing out early and kids walking to the bus. When we replace a driveway or front walk, we plan the work so there is always a safe way to the street, and we leave barricades in place until the concrete can take foot traffic. A walk that is closed for two days is easier to live with when you know about it in advance.
Detached garages
You will find detached garages on old and new Epworth lots alike. A slab carrying walls needs deeper edges and sill anchors placed during the pour, and the floor should fall slightly toward the door. We confirm footing and permit requirements with the city before pouring.
Epworth History and Growth
- Wesley's namesake. Epworth was platted in 1855, takes its name from John Wesley's birthplace of Epworth in Lincolnshire, England, and incorporated on November 20, 1879.
- Steady growth. The city had 2,023 residents in 2020 against 1,428 in 2000; the housing count went from 500 to 717 units, and 2.5% stood empty in 2020.
- On U.S. 20. About 12 miles west of Dubuque on U.S. 20, Epworth has many residents who work outside the community.
- Seminary town. Divine Word College, a Roman Catholic seminary, is in Epworth; public school students attend the Western Dubuque district.

Epworth Questions
My front steps lean away from the porch. Can they be pushed back?
Usually not well. Steps that drifted were built without a solid footing. Replacing them on a proper base is the fix that stays put.
Should I replace my walk and steps at the same time?
On older Epworth lots it often makes sense, so the grades meet cleanly and the finish matches. We price them separately so you can choose.
How do I protect a new driveway from highway slush?
Skip rock salt the first winter, rinse off heavy brine buildup when you can, and apply sealer after the cure, then again every two to three years.
Can a sunken stoop be raised instead of replaced?
Sometimes, if it is still one solid piece. A stoop that is cracked through or pulling away at the steps usually needs replacing on a new base.
