Concrete for an Established Small City

Concrete Contractors in Cuba City work under rows of presidential banners: they hang along Main Street and give the place its nickname, the City of Presidents. The town was first going to be Yuba City, but that name was taken. It incorporated as a Grant County village in 1894, became a city in 1925, and sits on State Highway 80. Most of its 2,138 people (1,890) live on the Grant County side; 248 live in Lafayette County.

A stable population means aging concrete

Cuba City's size has hardly changed in half a century. There were 1,993 residents in 1970 and 2,138 fifty years later, and 899 homes at the 2010 count. When a town does not grow much, most of its concrete is old rather than new. The jobs that follow:

  • Front steps that have dropped or pulled away from the porch
  • Sidewalk squares lifted by street trees
  • Driveways cracked across with one side higher than the other
  • Garage floors sunk in the middle with water pooling at the back wall

Each of these is a base or drainage problem showing through the concrete.

Tree roots and walks

Big old trees shade Cuba City's blocks, and their roots are the usual culprit behind a heaved walk. Before we pour a replacement, we expose the root and talk through the options: a safe trim, a small jog in the walk's path, or a heavier reinforced panel that bridges the root instead of cutting it.

Steps that stay put

When steps drift from the house, it is almost always because they were set on dirt instead of a footing. We remove the old set and pour new on a proper base, with even risers, a broom finish and a landing at the door.

Garage floors

In an older detached garage, we can remove the failed floor in sections and pour a new one with a slope to the door. If the walls rest on the old slab, we check how they are supported before removal so nothing shifts during the work.

Two counties, one city

With the city split between Grant and Lafayette counties, we ask city hall what your address needs before work on a public walk or at the curb.

The Round School and school-year timing

The elementary and middle schools share a circular building locals call the Round School, and the high school is small, with roughly 250 to 300 students. In a town this size, school traffic is predictable, and we plan walk and driveway closures around it. Summer is the easiest time for front-walk work on the busier routes to school.

Older blocks, smaller lots

Cuba City's settlement started with 160 acres bought by John Amie Merle and Mathais Comstock in Grant County, and the city is compact, a little over a square mile at about 1,010 feet. Lots near Main Street are small, so equipment access matters. A ready-mix truck may need to park on the street and chute or wheel concrete in, and we plan that during the visit.

Aprons on Highway 80

State Highway 80 carries traffic straight through town, and driveways that open onto it take plow spray, salt and the weight of cars turning in at speed. The apron, the strip between the street and the walk, usually fails before the rest of the drive. When the drive behind it is sound, we saw-cut the apron at a joint, rebuild the base and pour it back thicker, with a smooth edge where it meets the street.

Winter care

A new slab's first winter should be sand only. From then on, go easy on de-icer and reseal on a two- to three-year cycle.

Cuba City Questions

There is a gap between my steps and the house. Can it be closed?

Usually not in a lasting way. Steps that drifted were built without a proper footing. New steps on a solid base stay put.

A tree root lifted my walk. Will it happen again?

It can. We look at the root and decide with you on trimming, rerouting or a thicker reinforced section.

Can you replace a garage floor without removing the walls?

Usually, if the walls and sills are sound. We check how the walls are supported first.
